Konrad Schmidt - St. Paul, MN
Introduction
Since 1987, fish surveys have been conducted at 65 state parks (See Map) to establish baseline data on species occurrence and relative abundance. Interim progress reports have been provided to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - Division of Parks and Recreation (Schmidt 1990a, 1990b, 1991, 1993a and 1993b). The purpose of this report is to compile a final species list for each state park. Potential uses include interpretation, monitoring short and long term trends in fish communities to factors which impact or improve habitat and water quality, and a reference list for reintroductions following a reclamation project or chemical spill.
Methods and Materials
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), University of Minnesota, and state park surveys were the primary sources used to compile the species lists. The MDNR sources included the Sections of Fisheries (lake and stream surveys), Wildlife (Nongame Program grant surveys), and Ecological Services (River Surveys and Instream Flow Programs). The University of Minnesota source was the fish collection at the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) sources were also used for state parks on the St. Croix and lower Mississippi Rivers. Sources are not restricted to surveys conducted within state park boundaries and often include lakes and streams in the general vicinity. Voucher specimens are rarely collected during MDNR surveys and only special concern species were saved from the state park surveys through 1991. However, one specimen of each species was deposited in the Bell Museum's fish collection from the state parks surveyed in 1992 and 1993. State parks were grouped by MDNR Regions and species listed alphabetically on the scientific name by family (Appendix II). Common and scientific names follow Robins et al (1991). Survey sources indicate the investigating agency or individual, location, and year surveys were conducted. Species reported in a survey where occurrence is unlikely and no voucher specimens were available for verification were deleted from the list. Abbrevia tions were used to indicate Special Concern (S), Limited (L), and Exotic (E) species. There are no Endangered or Threatened Fishes in Minnesota (Coffin and Pfannmuler 1988), but 16 are listed Special Concern. Limited is an arbitrary and unofficial status, but indicates a species which is restricted in distribution or rarely abundant anywhere in Minnesota. Exotics are species which were not present in Minnesota before European settlement and were introduced either intentionally for sport or accidentally through human related activities.
Results
The historical distribution of native fishes in Minnesota is difficult to determine because early survey information is either non-existent or incomplete. Since European settlement range extensions have occurred through stocking programs and bait pail releases. Conversely, the distribution of many species have been greatly reduced through logging, agriculture, pollution, and waterway development projects. Underhill (1989) established a checklist of fishes for Minnesota's eight major drainage basins (Figure 2) and related the distribution of many species to late Pleistocene glaciation. The checklist has been summarized and includes the number of state parks located in each basin (Table 1). The lower Mississippi River drainage basin has the greatest diversity at 117 fishes which include 13 special concern and 19 limited species. The Missouri River basin is the least diverse at 39 fishes which include 2 special concern and 1 limited species.

| 8. Rainy River and Lake of the Woods | 68 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 6 |
| Overall | 153 | 16 | 36 | 13 | 65 |
The state park lists have been summarized in a similar format and include the drainage basin where each park is located (Table 2). Minnesota Valley Trail and William O'Brien were the most diverse parks at 80 and 79 species respectively. Monson Lake was the least diverse at 12 species. Frontenac and Afton had the greatest number of special concern species at 7. However, the Blue Catfish sampled from Lake Pepin is suspected to be from a St. Croix River stocking program (Larry Gates-MDNR/Fisheries pers. comm.). John A. Latsch and William O'Brien had the greatest number of Limited species at 8 and 7 respectively. Jay Cooke had the greatest number of exotics at 7.

Fish community analysis based on the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) has been used to develop biological criteria in assessing the environmental quality in streams and rivers (Karr 1981). The IBI methodology divides the entire community into species richness, taxa, feeding, spawning, and tolerance metrics which are summed for a numerical score that rate a station from very poor to excellent. This requires metric lists be established for the fish fauna present in a state or study area. Statewide metric lists for Minnesota fishes are still being developed (Bailey et al 1993). However, these preliminary results have been augmented with metric lists developed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (Lyons 1992) to provide an overview of ecological classifications for most species present in Minnesota (Appendix I). Feeding levels include top carnivores, insectivores, omnivores, herbivores, filter feeders, generalist feeders, and parasites. Tolerance is a species sensitivity to changes in water quality and habitat. Spawning behavior is restricted to simple lithophils which provide no parental care of fry and require clean, silt free gravel for proper egg development. Status indicates exotics, special concern and limited species in Minnesota, and state listed species in Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota (Schmidt 1990c).
Recommendations
Continue fish surveys in new state parks and additions which have aquatic resources (e.g., Tettegouche - Palisade Valley). Establish a rotational survey schedule for state park lakes and streams to monitor changes in fish communities and assess habitat and water quality. Provide checklists to investigators conducting surveys and encourage them to collect and preserve specimens of listed, limited, exotic, and new occurrence species for the Bell Museum fish collection. Request data updates periodically from the MDNR Natural Heritage Program which began compiling fish element occurrence records (EOR) in 1993 on computer and 7.5 minute series (topographical) maps. Refrain from reclamation projects which treat an entire watershed because attempts to restore all the non-target species of the historical fish community is rarely achieved. However, if all alternatives have been eliminated, propose a reintroduction program which is modeled after the Knife Lake (Kanabec County) reclamation project (Schmidt 1990d and 1993c). Finally, develop interpretive programs using Aquatic Project Wild curriculum and design nature center exhibits which could encompass aquatic ecology themes or maintaining an aquarium of fishes found at the park (Schmidt and Schmidt 1987 and Schmidt 1989).
